For those of you who remember a while ago i wrote about an everyday interaction i had with a man at cartridge world when i went to get my ink refilled. We just had a really good conversation about life and what’s possible and this was because i intentionally create space and time in my life to be available to the now moments. Anyways, yesterday i went back for the third time to pick up some paper and again we were caught up in some great conversation. We spoke about refugees coming into australia and he started by saying that he wasn’t keen to allow people in because they could be terrorists. By the end of the conversation i know he had a bit more to think about and i quite openly challenged a number of his beliefs. We were able to just talk about it for half an hour or so and i know that was a really significant conversation and opportunity. Often i feel like in the big scheme of things i/we are losing to the injustices of this world and then times like this remind me that the change i am wanting to see happens one person at a time.

Last night i was out in the valley in Brisbane just hanging out with some friends. As I looked around at the masses of young adults filling the streets, lining up for hundreds of metres to get into the trendy bars, (there is no other place, at least in Brisbane, where i have seen so many people week after week all clearly seeking the same thing) a few questions started entering my mind.

Is this what life has become about for most??? What are they thinking??? What is really going on in their hearts??? Are they content and happy to be here and live this life??? If so what does that mean for me and what i believe??? Why would someone want to trade in that life for this one???

I have no answers only questions at this point. Just really trying to seek out what my life means in this context where clearly i am the minority however having a message to bring. A message that is meant to be truth bringing life to the full and if this is the case then why do sooooo many people pass it up????

Any comments would be appreciated from people who at times feel like they struggle with the same thing????

Occasionally in life, you get a urge to do something and find the resources to be able to do it.

One day I woke up and decided a few things:

I don’t want to buy clothes that keep people trapped in poverty just so I can have a nice pair of jeans.

I don’t want to look like a complete turnip when I wear my ethics.

I don’t want want to have to remortgage my house to buy a T-shirt.Armed with these apparently simple criteria, I looked around but couldn’t find anything appropriate. So I decided to do it myself and set up a company. It is called the Freedom Clothing Project Ltd and it is a not-for-profit co-operative. Our clothes are ethical, wearable and affordable.

To find out more about this company go to http://freedom-clothing.co.uk

Its obvioue people loved Steve Irwin, even though many of us Aussies were a bit embarassed by him as an ambassador for our country. It’s funny how after someone dies and you hear their story you realise how tops they were after-all. Samantha and I were watching him talk in an interview on Andrew Denton and realised that big Stevo had a few Jesus like characteristics…Hence Steve Irwin v. Jesus.

1. Stevo said he treated animals/reptiles, the environment and people how he wanted to be treated himself. Jesus said “love your neighbour as you love yourself”

2. Stevo didn’t care about taking up invitations to have dinner with celebrities and important people like Bill Clinton, he’d rather keep doing what he was passionate about and spend time with his family rather than hob-nob with the stars. Jesus was passionate about people, not whether they were poor or rich, cool, uncool, infuential or powerless, he kept it real and got on with what was important.

3. Stevo was influential, well known and loved because of his passion for what he believed in. Jesus is still one of the most famous and influential figures in history because of his passion, integrity, and his love for people and the world.

We know that there are heaps of things Jesus is that Stevo wasn’t but its interesting to think about why people loved Stevo so much, cause I reckon in Stevo we saw a glimpse of the Jesus we are looking for but often don’t see in the Church.

Tim and Maz Walker (married 18 years, three boys, Chris Josh and Arron)

Aug 2005 – Aug 2006 has been the most eventful year of our lives, this all
started when we decided to start living as Jesus says…..

Oct 2005, we give away our most expensive possession (except for the house
and the bank really owns that.!) our car to a couple who didn’t have one,
this sounds OK, but you must understand that we live in a small village 5
miles from the nearest town/shops and schools, we needed our car to
transport the boys to school, we had cancelled their Bus pass cause it was
too much money, the car wasn’t a battered up old rust bucket, we had saved
hard to buy the best car we could afford, ABS, Power Steering, Air
Conditioning, Air Bags, CD Player etc, but God called us to do this and so
we did…it wasn’t easy and we struggled at first but God is our provider and
in March of this year he provided another car ‘free of charge’ to help us
out, we have subsequently given that away.!…but God keeps on providing.!

Dec 2005, we (Maz, me and the boys) had already decided to give up our
Christmas in the UK and visit an AIDS project in Cape Town for Christmas,
9th Dec we set off to Cape Town to spend a month with Thembalitsha
(Christian Charity who work with Babies and young people with or affected by
HIV AIDS)..what an amazing time we had, visiting the AIDS Clinic, playing
with the children from the ex street kid shelters, painting and decorating,
tidying play areas in the Townships….loving the children as Jesus would, our
boys had no Christmas presents, just the knowledge that they were doing just
what Jesus would have done…..the story is to big to tell here.

April 2005 Maz returns to Cape Town for two weeks to work with the charity,
at the same time God places it on my heart to buy a property in South Africa
to use as a base for international volunteers who go to visit the
charity…that cost me over £70K, money that I didn’t have, still don’t but I
know that God gave me the property to buy, the estate to buy it on etc…you
wouldn’t believe it but we have bought the house via the internet, never
seen it but found out afterwards that it’s just opposite the Township that
the Charity (unbeknown to me) were just starting work in.!…amazing…the
estate agent turned out to be a white middle class Christian lady, she has
now been out to visit the townships and projects that the charity are
working on (that’s an amazing story in it’s self if you know white south
africans …!

Summer 2006, we have created strong links with the charity, Adrian Lange
from Thembalitsha visited the UK to help spread the news about HIV AIDS in
South Africa and we had opportunity to speak to many about the charities
work…we also have had the pleasure of welcoming Simon Guillebaud from Great
Lakes Outreach in Burundi into our home to speak to friends and family……God
is amazing at setting up networks….

This is a very long story and I can’t go into all the nitty gritty of it now
but I hope that it might start to inspire others to step out into the
calling that God has for their lives, it might cost you, it might cost you a
lot but if it’s Gods will then pursue it with all your heart mind and soul.

The documentary “Born Into Brothels” is about the potential in children, and the power of an individual to help them achieve it.

When photographer Zana Briski was assigned to capture images of Calcutta’s notorious red light district, Sonagachi, she quickly developed relationships with the children born and raised in brothels.

Uneducated and neglected, these children worked at odd jobs with little hope of ever leaving their bleak environment. Many were destined for the same vocation as their mothers.

Briski became a resident of the brothel for five years. During that time, she provided the children with point and shoot cameras, set up classes in photography, and trained them to document the harsh reality of their daily lives in film.

‘Born Into Brothels’ tells the story of this time, taking us inside the squalid living conditions and allowing us to see the world through the eyes of some of its most vulnerable residents, five girls and three boys, aged ten to fourteen.

The children responded with passion, surprised and grateful that someone was showing genuine faith in their abilities and talents. Soon they were expressing their lives, emotions and daily struggles through the camera, portraying both truth and beauty in their ugly world.

Briski attempted to find places for the children in boarding schools, to take them our of their cycle of poverty and exploitation. But often she came up against objections from their own mothers or guardians, who believed that they were dependent on their children for additional income, or expected them to become the next generation of sex workers.

Showcasing the children’s art to Western audiences made it possible to raise money and provide education options for the Sonagachi children. One of the children was even offered an award and invited to study in Europe.

This is a sensitive. bitter-sweet and thought-provoking documentary with a strong focus on the innocence of children in an adult world.

While there’s no happy ending, Briski’s own story is an inspiring example of how one person can bring lasting change.

And the movie also highlights the potential of children worldwide who, given the right opportunities, show extraordinary talent and determination to succeed.

my favourite moment this week was after a friend’s gig, at 2am, in a noisy bar crowded with drunken kids trying to impress each other. there were half a dozen of us, none of us liked the vibe but there was nowhere else open, and somehow in the lounges in the corner, shouting over the music, i had a couple of honest vulnerable conversations with people i really like but never see, except in bars or at parties.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF SAMMY JOCKEL

I went to Cartridge world the other day, in the little town of Reddy Redcliffe, to get some ink for my printer. It was one of my unpaid days of work, in that it was a day dedicated to being present and available to whatever popped up in my community / street.

So here i was in Cartridge World. I asked the guy behind the counter if he could fill my ink cartridge and right from the start i noticed he was somewhat of an interesting character. We got chatting about all different kinds of stuff. He started telling me about his past two marriages and i just remember at one point he used the term eschatalogical and i thought …………… WHAT THE???

He asked me what i did and i told him that i did 3 days paid work a week as a state high school chaplain and the rest of my time i dedicated to being present to my community, neighbours and having time for conversations such as this one. He inquired a bit more about my paid work and i shared with him that the bulk of my time is focused on helping young people come up with strategies about how they can be safe in their own homes.

He became quite overwhelmed at the thought that this had become the reality of a significant amount of young people living in our community. He then really encouraged me and gave me some lollies and catridge world pens to give to the young people i work with.

To most this may not seem like much but to me it was really significant. I believe the spirit of God touched this man’s heart and he responded to that spirit. It may have only been in some words of encouragement, a few lollies and pens but this is all he had and he gave it to a complete stranger.

The spirit of God touched me too that day and i am continuely surprised at how God is moving in my everyday interactions challengeing me to continue to make time for these. I will go back to that man (my colour cartridges have just run out) not just because of this, though it does help, but because i believe the spirit of God is still at work in the everyday stuff.

This is just one amongst many stories i will share in times too come……….please e-mail your stories to me at…………….sammyjockel@optusnet.com.au……….. so i can post them on this blog……………….I need to hear your stories and so do others………so that together we can hear and experience God everyday
