A Letter By Muslims To Christians: About The Violence Committed Against You By Those Who Profess The Same Faith As Us

Today I am traveling to Lahore to take part in some Micah workshops. And I am taking with me the beautiful letter below from Muslims in Australia to Christians in Pakistan, bridging the growing divide between our communities, expressing concern for their suffering and commitment to their welfare. Dave

Our dear Christian sisters and brothers

May the peace, blessing and mercy of our Creator be upon you.

We write you as Muslims living in Brisbane, Australia, compelled to reach out to you after some of the recent violent events perpetuated against you, your family and fellow Christians by some people who profess the same faith as us.

When we heard about the violence committed against you, simply for worshipping and serving your Lord, we hurt and grieve deeply.

We hurt that anyone should be persecuted because of their faith; we hurt that some of the people who committed these acts of violence supposedly shared our faith.

You are our sisters and brothers, sharing the same Abrahamic family, faith and legacy. We should be strengthening each other’s faith, finding solutions together to build a stronger community, a better humanity.

We want you to know that a true Muslim cannot hurt anyone, especially a Christian in any way, by his or her hands, or even by his or her tongue. Indeed, the Prophet Muhammad demanded Muslims unequivocally be agents of mercy and compassion, especially for those who do not share our faith.

We also want you to know that as Muslims, it is our religious duty to protect your sacred church, as it is a sanctuary for you, a place of worship, a place of service, a place of love, a place of celebration, a place of lament, but most of all it is a place where you should find safety and solace.

Here in Australia, please know we feel your pain. We feel the pain of all Christians who are suffering violence, cruelty and oppression. Instead of giving in to the despair, we will channel that pain to continue our relationship building efforts with those who are courageously willing to traverse this path of peace, love, compassion and justice.

Wishing you all much peace and love,

Nora Amath
