the funeral was great. old-school catholic, with incense and holy water. the priest opened with the beatitudes (which i translated in my head to the version we have on this site), and the last speaker, steve’s sister, finished with the serenity prayer, which steve would have said thousands of times over the last ten years, alone or in an AA meeting. and she asked us to do it the way they do – so we all stood up, and held hands, and repeated after her, “god give me the serenity to accept the things i cannot change…” it was a beautiful thing.

i’ll leave you with the most profound thing Steve ever said to me:

“if you go into your room, close the door, kneel on the floor and ask god to forgive you, well fuck me if it doesn’t work!“

the good news is, we’re in the top ten hits for seearches on “be attitudes” and “beattitudes” (though we still don’t rate if you spell beatitudes properly – but maybe we don’t want to). we’re also the number 2 hit for “matt 5:10″ and in the top 20 for phrases like “blessed are those who are persecuted”

most of the other searches we rank high for are the people who’s content we use. so if you’re searching for morepraxis or ploughshares, you’ll find us. which is fair enough. we don’t rank very high on searches for Dave Andrews, but at least Dave is the number one “dave andrews” on the internet, just above a kit car enthusiast and a real estate agent…

Someone needs to register a Technorati profile and claim wecan.be. I’d do it but I already have about 15 blogs registered. Once you’ve done that you can register key words in the wecan.be blog profile. You can also add a Technorati widget that gives you an updated idea of who is linking to wecan.be

At present, all the WordPress categories are working as ‘tags’ in Technorati. To help people access the site through topics such as Darfur we’d need a system that allows for keywords for each post, added by the writer or editor. So down the track we could look at adding a Technorati tags WordPress plugin.

i’ve added a few Features. geek that i am, it’s much easier to add features than to write posts. they are:

- there’s a hit counter on the pages. it will probably be pretty disappointing for a while, feeling like you’ve spent the whole morning writing something and a week later only two people have read it. but knowing something is better than knowing nothing, i think…

- people can subscribe to a particular post, so they get an email telling them when someone has replied. that’s good, cos there’s more chance of a some actual discussion happening around the posts.

- also ralph hunted down the bug that was stopping firefox from showing the top menu. yay!

Getting the API key means you have to create a free blog on their site. I don’t have a use for another blog at the moment. I called it wecanbe.wordpress.com – with the username wecanbe and the password planbe
If anyone wants to play with it – feel free.
