Unexpected Places – Sammy Jockel

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF SAMMY JOCKEL

I went to Cartridge world the other day, in the little town of Reddy Redcliffe, to get some ink for my printer.  It was one of my unpaid days of work, in that it was a day dedicated to being present and available to whatever popped up in my community / street.

So here i was in Cartridge World.  I asked the guy behind the counter if he could fill my ink cartridge and right from the start i noticed he was somewhat of an interesting character.  We got chatting about all different kinds of stuff.  He started telling me about his past two marriages and i just remember at one point he used the term eschatalogical and i thought …………… WHAT THE???

He asked me what i did and i told him that i did 3 days paid work a week as a state high school chaplain and the rest of my time i dedicated to being present to my community, neighbours and having time for conversations such as this one.  He inquired a bit more about my paid work and i shared with him that the bulk of my time is focused on helping young people come up with strategies about how they can be safe in their own homes.

He became quite overwhelmed at the thought that this had become the reality of a significant amount of young people living in our community.  He then really encouraged me and gave me some lollies and catridge world pens to give to the young people i work with.

To most this may not seem like much but to me it was really significant.  I believe the spirit of God touched this man’s heart and he responded to that spirit.  It may have only been in some words of encouragement, a few lollies and pens but this is all he had and he gave it to a complete stranger.

The spirit of God touched me too that day and i am continuely surprised at how God is moving in my everyday interactions challengeing me to continue to make time for these.  I will go back to that man (my colour cartridges have just run out) not just because of this, though it does help, but because i believe the spirit of God is still at work in the everyday stuff.

This is just one amongst many stories i will share in times too come……….please e-mail your stories to me at…………….sammyjockel@optusnet.com.au……….. so i can post them on this blog……………….I need to hear your stories and so do others………so that together we can hear and experience God everyday 🙂
