As an adult I became increasingly disenchanted with my namesake ‘David’, who no doubt was much ‘beloved’ – but seemed to love no-one but himself.

I don’t think David really loved the women in his life, and though Jonathan ‘loved him as his own soul’ (1 Sam.18:1) and he said Jonathan’s love for him ‘was wonderful, surpassing the love of women’ (2 Sam.1:26), I think David manipulated and exploited the love of King Saul’s son for his own purposes.

When David became King, he used his much-loved status to unscrupulously consolidate his tyranny and cunningly take advantage of his devoted subjects.

By contrast I want to be a ‘David’ who appreciates I am ‘much loved’ and that ‘from those to whom much is given much will be required’ (Luke 12:48) I want to be a faithful Dave – a Dave who is ‘faithful as a friend’, ‘faithful to the end’.
