Fortnightly, a group of residents in Brisbane organise a community meal in a church hall in South Brisbane. On first appearances it appears to be at least a little chaotic and haphazard. But it’s well loved by those who go. It’s most definitely NOT a soup kitchen but that’s probably the closest reference point. Three years ago Kate Walton came to Shared Meal and when she first stepped through the hall’s doors she felt confronted by a whirlwind of sounds and frenetic activity. There are no rosters, no official list of volunteers, no discussion about who is going to bring what. It just happens and has done for 25 years. We find out how.
