The Longer I Live The Less I Believe, But The Little I Believe In, I Believe In More And More

I love catching up with friends over a cup of tea.

It’s a chance to take time out, swap stories, compare notes, and get some much-needed encouragement for the next stage of the journey.

By the time we get round to the second or third cup of tea,  we often find ourselves talking about our faith -about how our life has been influenced by our beliefs, and – in turn – affected our beliefs.

As a result of these conversations I have come to realise that – the longer I live, the less and less I believe – but the little I believe in, I believe in more and more.

There’s a whole lot I used to believe – that I used to talk about day and night – that I just don’t talk about any more. I couldn’t care less about it. It doesn’t make any difference to me whether it’s true, or not.

But there is one thing, among the many things I used to believe, that I still believe –and still talk about as passionately as ever before – and that is the gospel embodied in the person of Jesus of Nazareth.

It is in the context of the gospel of Jesus that we can begin to truly appreciate the importance of Plan Be – begin to truly appreciate the importance of embodying the Be-Attitudes in the context of a world characterised by poverty and violence.

And it is in the context of the gospel of Jesus we can begin to get a glimpse of some of the implications of Plan Be – that in embodying the Be-Attitudes we can actually do God’s will ‘on earth as it is in heaven’, and in doing God’s will, we can actually embody something of the hope of heaven in the midst of ’hell’s despair’.

Hey, I believe, that you and me can be the change we want to see in the world.
